I’ve already heard from a couple of people who also have huge T-shirt collections that they don’t know what to do with — when they’re part of your history, it’s hard to just get rid of them, and I’m here to testify that if you’ve got a lot of them, they don’t wear out. Maybe I’m starting a new subgenre, the T-shirt memoir? (Likely someone else has already started it. I’ll probably run into them shortly . . .)

Susanna, I too have a serious T-shirt addiction. It started when I entered running road races and triathlons then when I started traveling a lot and wanted T-shirt’s to remember where I’d been. Over the years I’m looking at well over a hundred and like you have been trying to decide what to do with them besides storing them in multiple boxes. Didn’t see a place to comment at the T-shirt post. My T-shirt purchase and storage system is way less developed. I have a pile of maybe 20, 30 in a drawer. I wear one a day, launder them weekly, and they go back in the drawer in the order in which I pile them after folding from the dryer. So the order (and color sequence) of the seven or eight varies slightly week to week. Today I’m wearing one made my a neighbor — a black T-shirt that showed a white drawing of Minnehaha Falls down the street, which I have on under a gray plaid collared shirt. A daring combo, I know.

Bob Franke has a funny song called “My Lover’s T-shirts,” about Joan Sherman’s T-shirt collection. Every time I listen to it, I laugh at the line about how “She’s trying to keep them down to ninety.” Muwahaha — when I first heard it I probably had 150 already.

Wiscon 14, a mere (ahem) 31 years ago. Any T-shirt of mine from then would be a pale remnant or a rag by now.

Nope. When you’ve got 190 T-shirts, nothing wears out. My most fragile is the SECEDE NOW shirt from the late ’70s, and even it is holding up pretty well.

Great start! Aesthetically pleasing website! Will you enter a post on individual tt-shirts with the story behind each one? This is a great idea, and could turn into a book! I’ll stay tuned …

Thanks, Lynn! I’ve written the first 6 posts already, and they’re all on the long side (about the length of this intro). That’s partly because I’m setting the stage — what I was doing, what I was involved in, and how those T-shirts came into my life. Some future posts, focused on particular shirts, are going to be a lot shorter. Do you think I should commit to a regular publication schedule, e.g., weekly or semi-weekly? I never have, but I can see the appeal, not least because I do better with deadlines.
